Emotional Well-Being
Mental health is everyone’s business, we all have times in our lives when we feel down, stressed or frightened. Usually these feelings pass but occasionally they may develop into a more serious problem and that can happen to any one of us.
The years of adolescence (teenage years) and young adulthood are ones of upheaval, change, and growth. How you meet the challenges of these years will to some extent determine your future life. Learning the skills needed to handle emotional problems will give you a foundation of mental and emotional health that will support you as your life circumstances change.
Emotional health has many aspects. Put simply, it is based on self-esteem, how you feel about yourself and behaviour that is appropriate and healthy.
Someone who is emotionally healthy:-
• Understands and adapts to change
• Make the most of their potential
• Copes with life and plays a part in family, educational, work or community settings
• Has a positive self understanding
• Has the ability to love and care for others
• Can act independently to meet his or her own needs
Everyone from time to time will experience problems. It is important to recognise when you need some support and be able to ask for it.
Many people mistakenly believe it is a sign of weakness or failure to admit that they experiencing problems. Also the stigma associated with mental health problems often means people are uncomfortable to talk about their feelings, however, it healthy and positive to know and say how you feel. Talking is not a sign of weakness it’s a sign of taking charge of your wellbeing. Being listened to will help you feel supported and less alone.
