What support does Connexions offer from a young person’s point of view?

Connexions provides a service for all young people to access in a variety of different ways to meet a range of needs.  Here are some examples.
• Support in looking for a job/training/apprentices/colleges/
• General information, advice and guidance
• CVs workshops
• Support from young parents
• Support for homeless young people
• Support for young offenders
• Support to young people in Centres for Learning, Schools, Colleges and Training Providers.
• Support to young people with Learning Disabilities and Difficulties (LDD)
• Connexions ensures all school leavers are supported and offered an opportunity of employment, education or training (September guarantee)
• Connexions ensures all 16 and 18 year olds that are unemployed are assigned and adviser and supported to find education employment or training.
• Connexions ensure that all young people over 18 who are unemployed are supported by Connexions, partner agencies an adult services to fine education, employment or training.   

What service do Connexions offer in the office?
• ‘Drop In’ for information, advice and guidance – speak to an adviser
• ‘Drop In’ for support on personal issues such as housing or substance misuse
• Referrals to partner agencies for support on matters such as sexual health, pregnancy and homelessness.
• Using our computers for various things such as Job Search or CVs
• Assisting with CVs
• Up to date vacancies and information on vacancies
• Photocopying/faxing/printing
• General information e.g. open days for colleges, training providers, etc
• EMA packs
• Application forms for colleges and providers
• Give feedback on the service/ given opportunity to get involved in shaping the service.

School work
In every school and Centres for Learning in Knowsley there are Connexions Personal Advisers.  Connexions works with young people from year 9 onwards. Every young person in year 11 is entitled to a careers guidance interview, however you can see an adviser whenever you want upon request. You may just need a chat about a particular issue concerning you or you may just need general advice.
• Information on colleges and training providers and/or assistance with applications.
• Information on apprenticeships
• Help and support making decisions for when leaving school
• Help with various websites, e.g. Kudos, Key clips, ichooseknowsley

College/Training provider work
There is Connexions support and advice available in colleges and training providers.  If you require,
• General information or advice
• Advice on your next steps or progression
• Support if you are having difficulty on your course
• Support on any personal issues

Work with unemployed young people
• Focused events in specific areas in the community
• Follow up calls to clients to offer them support an talk about any new opportunities
• Home visits – Give information and advice for clients at home
• Projects and programmes young people can get involved in e.g. Activity Agreement
• Questionnaires and evaluation forms to be completed to capture young person’s views about unemployment
• Support in getting a guaranteed place of training or learning
• Regular meeting with advisers and access to the service in our centres

Youth involvement/engagement
Connexions encourages all young people aged 13 – 19 to give feedback to the service, in order to shape the service to meet the needs of young people. Young can get involved with the Knowsley Connexions VOYC group.  This group meet every month  to discuss issues that young people face in Knowsley and all feed into other groups within Knowsley and the wider areas.  If you would like to get involved in having your say about Connexions and the services that effect young people you can call into any of the centres or speak to your adviser.  Alternatively you can call Donna Naden on 0151 949 5700.
Knowsley Connexions Centresare open from 9am Monday – Friday.
They close at 5 pm except on Mondays and Fridays where they close at 4pm.
