Street Issues

KEEPING YOUNG PEOPLE SAFE ON THE STREETS
More crimes are committed against teenagers than any other age group, Here are some things you can do to keep safe on the streets:

• Let someone know where you are going ant night and what time you will be home
• Stay alert, and MP3 players turned off, so that you can hear what's going on around them
• Keep expensive items such as phones out of sight. Keep mobile phone ringers on silent to avoid attracting attention
• Stick to busy, well-lit roads,  avoid ‘waste ground’ and short cuts through alleyways
• If you think someone is following you  go to a place with lots of people around, like a bus stop or shop.
• If someone tries to take something from you do not fight them. let them take it but try to remember as much as possible about them and report them to inform the police
• Don't  carry weapons  (even for protection) because they are more likely to be used against you, and it's illegal.

THE LAW
Police can search anyone they suspect of carrying a knife.
If you carry a knife you may be arrested, go to court and get a criminal record, or even a prison sentence.
It is a criminal offence to have a knife or other weapon on the street or on school premises.
Schools have the right to ‘screen’ all pupils for knives at any time, without consent, even if there is no obvious reason for suspicion.
Schools can authorise the search of any pupil for a knife without consent if they have reasonable grounds for suspicion, or call in the police to conduct a search.
If a pupil refuses to be searched or screened (screening is when an electronic ‘wand’ or a screening arch is used to find metallic objects) the school can refuse to have the pupil on the premises.
If a knife or other weapon is found on a pupil, the police will be called and it is likely the pupil will be arrested.
